Economic Vision & Strategy

The Tweed is one of the fastest growing regions of NSW and indeed Australia. Current population predictions suggest that by 2016 the Tweed Shires population will increase by 41,000 people.

Managing this population growth in a sustainable manner is a challenge faced by both local and state government as they attempt to come to terms with the increasing demands and pressures of an aging demographic, globalisation, national and international competitiveness, environmental protection, industry restructuring, urban development, job generation, regional and local government economic sustainability.

The Tweed Economic Development Corporation Ltd (TEDC) has long promoted the need for the diversification and broadening of the Tweed economic base, as part of a vision and strategy to deliver economic social and environmental sustainability for the Tweed, based on understanding the economic drivers of the local economy, substantiated and supported by the facts.

The TEDC has prepared an Economic Vision and Strategy for the Tweed Shire that not only outlines where we are, but more importantly, what we need to do if we are to continue to grow in a responsible, sustainable manner.

The TEDC Economic Vision + Strategy 2007 – 2010 is comprised of 4 sections:

Where are we now? – Presents a statistical portrait of the current status of the Tweed economy, a basis of fact for identifying strategies for moving forward, substantiated by ongoing statistical research and analysis, including information provided by the Tweed & Northern Rivers Economic Modelling tool.

Where are we going? - provides an outline of growth expectations if the status quo is maintained. That is, where will the Tweed be if it does not pursue proactive, visionary, sustainable, economic growth strategies.

Where do we want to be? – provides a possible vision or snapshot of the future for the Tweed, from a sustainable economic perspective. This vision articulates possible outcomes and aspirations for delivering a sustainable future for all residents of the Tweed, and will provide a constant reminder of what we need to achieve.

How do we get there? - provides the plan for facilitating sustainable economic growth in the Tweed.  This component of the document aims to provide the strategic directions required to achieve the desired Economic Vision for the Tweed, as set out in the previous section – Where do we want to be?

The Tweed is part of the greater Northern Rivers and South East Queensland regional economies, inextricably linked, challenging, changing and growing at an unprecedented rate. These challenges and changes can only be managed if there is a plan and vision, which provides some direction on what needs to be done, if we are to achieve economic, social and environmental sustainability.

This strategy will assist governments, investors, property developers and residents by providing a basis of understanding on what we need to do to meet future challenges, if we wish to protect, enhance and preserve the lifestyle values offered by the Tweed.
